Lottery open for chance to hunt bison on Blackfeet Reservation ​

HELENA – Hunters have until Dec. 22 to purchase lottery chances for a guided bison hunt on the Blackfeet Reservation. The drawing will be held on Dec. 23. The lottery is a way FWP partners with the Blackfeet Tribe to demonstrate a shared commitment to managing fish and wildlife across the state and to facilitate hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities.

The lottery is open to all hunters – tribal members, nonmembers, Montana residents and nonresidents. Chances are $10 each, and hunters can purchase up to 20 chances. At least 400 bison chances need to be sold or the winner pays $500. Successful hunters can keep the bison’s head, hide and meat.

To enter the drawing, go to fwp.mt.gov/buyandapply. Lottery opportunities can also be purchased at a license provider or an FWP office. For more information, contact the Blackfeet Fish and Game office at 406-338-7207.

I think I would donate half the meat and the head to the tribe. Either that or I would be giving lots of meat to you guys.

380 lbs of meat 2 people sausage in the morning.
1/4 a pound.
another 1/2 a pound for dinner in lasagna or a burger.
Sometimes I have friends or kids over to eat.

273 lbs of meat eaten in a year easy for the 2 people.
OH you want fish and bird now and then------ fine the Bison meat lasts 2 years.

My problem would be wifey not eating it unless ground. She would not touch anything else. You have met her (and treated her like a queen I might add) She is an animal lover and would be a vegan if she did not know how bad that was for you. Personally I could go to carnivorous lite if given the chance. Only bread would be the buns on burgers and dogs at lunch and veggies would be an occasional salad or fries with my dinner steak.

Been a few years, but bought a 1/4 bison and it was just under 125 pounds of meat. Stakes, a few roasts, and the majority ground. It's good meat. Good flavor, good fats, and novel. Bison aren't as meaty as beef cattle.

We’ve been eating half of a 1200-1400# steer every year for the last several years, and that equates to 225-250# of meat. If you cook at home, it’s not a stretch to consume it, but if you eat out a lot, it’s probably going to be too much for you.
