I'm wanting to take some clips from some of my son's football games that his coach put on DVD, but don't have the software or program to do it. Any advice on a decent program that won't clutter my laptop up with hidden crap, etc?

MacX DVD Ripper Pro... If you're on an apple product. If you don't need to rip i.e. the disc is not DRM protected then you need an editor. iMovie if you're on an apple will do just fine.

Handbrake or Freemake Free Video converter.

I have used both with no issue. I like Freemake currently as it appears to have more codecs, or at least they're more easily accessible to a newb like me. They also have setting for various devices presets, like iPods for example. You can convert existing video files, or pull and convert directly from the DVD.

Handbrake is what I used for my Mac some 4-5 years ago. It was good but it was all sloooooow back then. The quad core processors and massive cheap RAM sure have sped things up.

The latest version of handbrake is really good, comes with all the mobile device preset formats and you can allocate system resources to the job as well. It's a little more complex but it has some great features... that's what I used to make mobile device "backup" copies of movies for the iPad and iPhone when I was on a PC.

I hear ya on the backups.

It is a sad day when I have to rip DRM movies that I legally own so that I can put them on my son's InnoTab, or my iPod Touch, or on a USB drive to watch through the Roku (non DVD player on that TV).

Thanks for the tips. I may give Handbrake another try. I looked at it when we got this new PC last month but was in a hurry to rip a disc and got overwhelmed. I went to Freemake and stuck with it.
