I learned from my Dad what not to do(I love and miss him, very smart and a very good person.) My Dad never talked about firearms or even mentioned he had them. One day I found a shotgun squirreled away in the basement while looking for a tool to fix my bike and saw a long box. No safe, no trigger lock (they weren't popular back then. Ammo was stored separately. The simple fact they were "taboo" made me more interested as a 10 y/o. It wasn't until I was 23 and bought my own firearm that he mentioned he had firearms. As a kid anything "off limits or hidden" especially as a teen made it more fascinating. So, with my own I made sure they knew the basics, I did keep them locked up, if they wanted to see them I would show them the proper way to handle. If we'd go out they would remind me to bring my gun with me.
