I teach my grandkids the same as you but I am unwilling to chance that curiosity will not over ride training at their age. They are all 6 and under.
Yep. My late father showed my brother and I where the guns were with the caveat if we touch them, he will give us a beating like no other. Didn’t stop my brother from shooting me two different times.

I can say that I have never pissed anyone off bad enough to shoot me . What were you doing that caused that twice? And did you stop after the second time or just hide the guns better?

The first time (I was in the sixth grade), we were playing around and I tried to poke him with a pitch fork. He shot me through my glasses. Literally dodged a bullet. Second time (around two years later ), he was screwing around with my dad’s nickel plated, break top, 32 cal Iver Johnson revolver. The bullet hit the belt loop of my Levi’s and then skimmed the heavy leather belt I was wearing leaving a bloody welt. My dad never found out about the second time.

My late brother was exceptionally bright with “personality disorders”. There are stories far worse than the two I mentioned.

My step son was 8 and I taught him all he needed to know about guns. I let him shoot my 30-30 at a melon. I stood behind him to catch him. The melon exploaded and he then knew what a gun will do to a person.

As soon as kids under my roof could cause a gun to fire, they were taken outside with .22s and a large can of tomato soup placed nearly within touching distance, where as soon as the soup settled on their shocked selves I told them that could be their foot or little Jimmy next door....they enjoyed shooting but never wanted to play with them out of curiosity, there was nothing to be curious over, and they respected guns and what they could do to those who thought a gun was a pal who would forgive mistakes.

I must be helpless. I don't have a nightstand. And all my handguns are carried, just not all at once.
I have a long gun, a pg shotgun and 1911 within reach of the bed, and if that 1911 not the one carried that day, then the 1911 I did carry that day cannot be placed in the same spot, it just one of those physics things.
And same as quite a few replies, a step past those are more, and another step or two further are more, and etc etc...
this is probably why I don't have a nightstand, it being superfluous as a gun storage/resting/placing spot, and no need yet for original purpose of holding a chamber pot.
