Dennis, I've been looking at Youtube videos on the different types of handgun competitions and the one one that stands out as being better for old farts as well as handicapped folks is SCSA / Steel Challenge......except for one of the eight stages where you have to move about six foot to the right all eight stages (of five steel plates each) are shot standing in one position, there is no runnin' & gunin' like some of the other handgun competitions.

Along with their other competition categories they also have a 'Senior' class which is 55-64 years old and a 'Super Senior' which is 65 years and older.

Does PCGC offer the SCSA Steel Challenge or maybe some other non SCSA sanctioned / just for funzies steel match ?

I noticed that the plates are painted white in SCSA competitions and all four of my 1911's have white three dot sights which leads me to believe that they wouldn't show up all that well against white targets......I'm not really wanting to change out my sights or dab black paint on them, I wonder if black electrical tape or something else would hold up during a match ?

Steel challenge is great fun. Shoot it every time I get a chance. USPSA also offers a senior and super senior division, but it is run and gun. Some just walk through the course because they like to shoot the course of fire. They aren't going to win, and they know it but it makes them better pistol shooters than a large percentage of the population.

I just started shooting a little over a year ago. I hadn’t shot since I was in the Air Force back in the 1990s. Except for qualification on an M-60 machine gun, I don’t think I ever shot at a target over 25 yards away until just recently. A friend invited me to shoot his 300 win mag at the Tri-Cities range last summer. I could barely see the target at 100 yards to even line up the scope. I got a few hits once I got a good natural point-of-aim. Just for fun, I tried to see if I could hit the 100 yard target with my Henry Golden Boy .22LR lever-action. Without a scope, I don’t even think I got close. I need to practice at longer ranges with my rifle, but with handguns, I don’t see a need past 25 yards. Heck, the average engagement range for self-defense is around 7-8 yards. Any closer than that, I’d have to resort to Judo.

Keeping in mind that I'm not shooting itty bitty targets, but trying to keep as many in the 8" -0 circle on the IDPA targets I generally use, I routinely shoot 25, 35, 50, and sometimes 60-70 yards with a pistol. I may be weird, but it's more of a personal challenge. At 35 and 50, it's more trying to keep them in the -0 and -1. Beyond that, just staying on paper is sufficient.

I've encountered this "25 yard freestyle" concept over at Pistol Forum, and that has been a massive kick in my pants. 10 rounds on a B8 at 25 yards. It just depends on the day, but half the time I don't even have a score worth even counting. That's a matter requiring one to force yourself to take your time, and forces some serious sight focus. I'm no good at it. I can get periodic scores in the upper 80's, but that's about it as of yet.

The Ponca City Rifle and Pistol Club Steel Challenge is every FORTH Saturday starting at 9AM, usually done by about noon.
Cost is $15 if I remember right, maybe $20. I'm usually there but I haven't shot in a couple of months.
