I hunted the wilderness area but it was 25 years ago. I'm sure it's all different now. Back then the underbrush was so thick that it was almost impossible to get a shot and very few trees to get into.
We both scored, while getting them out was difficult because of once again the heavy brush, was on a pole over our shoulders.

Welcome to OSA and congratulations on your SP draw. You've drawn into one of the hardest, but most rewarding hunts offered by ODWC. Top 10 among all offered by ODWC. I agree with everything said before. Elevation will be key along with luck. All the Fed (F&W) guys have always been very helpful to me.

I hope it dries out a little bit before you get there, but with this amount of water recently and the lack of elevation to drain it will probably still be squishy. Take rubber boots, a cart to pull the deer out or a drag rope that you can wear like a backpack to drag the deer out. The deer can get pretty damn BIG up there. Shoot the first doe you see! Rattle in that dense brush.

but, but, but, with all that said, you could talk to F&W guys and tell them you want an easier hunt. They can point you to elevated levee to where you would likely have success. There are deer everywhere in and around the refuge. You don't have to bust your a** to have a fun and successful hunt. You two could consider this recon for a more through hunt in the future.

Cherokee Inn is a decent place. Nice folks run the place. Not sure about accommodations in Jet. If you are lucky you have a cabin at the state park or you are camping. A few years ago the nearest processing place was in Kiowa, KS (25 miles). That was earlier in the season. Alva may have one during gun season. Lamont is supposed to have a pretty good steakhouse, Kat's (50 miles), but I usually have Pizza Hut, make sandwiches, open a can of sardines along with nuts, crackers and an apple.

Enjoy the Sandhill and goose daily flights. They can be pretty spectacular. Take a looksee at Little Sahara. Interesting place.

I am excited for you. Report back. I'd like to hear what experience you and you dad have up there.

Good luck :)
