I don't know anything about mental health laws; when can a person be required to get help? And what kind of help?
I think it's a box of worms that needs to be opened.
No idea on IL, but in OK it appears not much will be done in regards to requiring a person to get help. My nieghbor's bipolar condition showed up 10 or so years ago and he's been a PITA ever since. No amount of calling the police or city government has made a difference. Any intervention that occurred only happened when he broke the law - shooting his gun off in the yard. More than once.
He can't be forced to take his meds or put into a facility, unless he agrees to it.
Since IL is more liberal, I'd guess they would be worse.
How comfortable are you with him owning firearms?
Not at all, but LE took them the last time he showed them off, that's when he went to jail for a few months and got back on 'some' of his meds. Just enough to talk to the judge and appear coherent.
There's nothing keeping him from getting another gun through a private sale other than his erratic behavior, slurred speech and shuffling around instead of walking. And having 100 or so stickers all over his RAM.
The back ground check the feds have is broken , The feds need to fix it. But in today sociality they do not want to except any blame. The guy should have not been able to purchase any guns with his problems, claimed he was going to kill himself on one occasion and another told his foamily he was going to kill them with a knife. But it is easier to blame the gun in our sociality because very few except any responsibilities for their actions. If the Feds would do their jobs it would stop a lot of this in my opinion. This kid should never have passed a background check.
I’m in favor of replacing the electric chair with electric bleachers. This kid needs a seat next to the rest of these morons.
In the interim, this country desperately needs to rethink our mental health policies and how we deal with the mentally ill.
Are they still withholding the specific weapon details? All I've seen is an AR type rifle but that's all.
