Your instincts are good. I know a guy who went into their shop. There were lots of people there. One of the PS guys came out and rudely demanded that everyone who wasn't there buy or sell should leave immediately.
Fame has its price, and a shop full of tourists might be one example of that. Point is, the guy acted like a jerk. I never watch their show because it is part of the oxymoron--reality TV.
I suspect that the coins are well hidden. If they did melt them, they probably decided not to chance getting busted on receiving stolen property charges. Not all pawn shops have this sort of ethics, but there are plenty that do.
