Yeah, got one and carry it but the funny thing is I've never used it. Always seem to make it through the day and usuallyjust boil up my needs.

Usually there is at least 4 of us when we go backpacking and my pot is a single serving one. One other person might have one as well. The filter is nice to just take the bladders/bottles down to the water source and fill and go. Also nice to have when you need some water on the go and don't have time to stop and boil. Of course, boiling will save you some $$.

If you are going to be on the move, it would be very difficult to carry more than a day or two of water. You have to plan to purify sources you find along the way. In my opinion that is the best option. Now that is for on the move.. If you buy land ideally you would want a natural spring on it so your source of fresh water is indefinite. However, that is MUCH easy said than done.. For me, I pack camden tablets, emergency straw filters, canteens with fresh water for a GOOD bag. My philosophy is if I am on the move I want to be as light and as fast as possible. Of course the trade off is I don't have as much as I would ideally like to.

You have to be very carefull drinking from a stream.

Ditto on the Katadyn. It's the Cadillac of portable filters and worth every penny. There's no practical way to carry more than about a quart of water with all the other stuff you're going to be carrying if you're going mobile. Unless you're an Army guy.

At that pricepoint I guess I'll need to mug someone with a Katadyn or scavenge one off of someone that couldn't escape the zombies.

I take the water thing serious myself, was a heat casualty several times in my Army days. I carry a Katadyn, lifestraws and the Iodine tablets.
as well as a 3lt bladder. I can do without a lot. But i can't mess around with no water.
