I would like to cut down an old break barrel single shot 12 gauge. I just want a compact utility shotgun but certainly don't want to get on the bad side of the law. Would I be legal and have some room to spare if I left the overall lenght of the barrel at 19 inches? Just wondering if they measure from the end of the chamber or something. Thanks

Don't measure overall length on the diagonal, get a yardstick and measure parallel to the barrel. The end of the barrel to the furthest point on the stock needs to be 26 inches. If your gun is measured on a diagonal from muzzle to the toe, it'll read longer than it is. Been people charged for possession of a SBS for mismeasuring on the diagonal.
