Does the Bible prohibit borrowing money? God's Word doesn't prohibit borrowing in general, but it does present principles that are critically important. Some Christians, as they decide how to apply these principles to their own lives, may choose not to borrow at all. Other Christians decide to borrow sensibly and repay properly. How much can a church borrow? A normal church can borrow up to about 4 times gross tithes and offerings, but it can be as high as six times its gross tithes and offerings. The maximum loan amount is based upon 4x-6x the church's gross tithes and offerings (before expenses). Is it a sin to go into debt? In fact, the Bible never states that you should not use debt. It does state however many times, that you should use extreme caution when doing so. Just like money can be used as a tool for good reasons and for bad, debt is the same way. What does God say about borrowing money? The absolute minimum that God's Word establishes for anyone who borrows is found in Psalm 37:21, “The wicked borrows and does not pay back, but the righteous is gracious and gives.” If we don't want to be considered by God to be wicked, we must repay any money we have borrowed.
