Each device can have it's own principal iCloud storage account/id if you don't need all the cloud stored documents available on wvery device but can share common apple ID so that if you buy an app on 1 device it propagates to all devices. That's how Jennifer and I do it. Olus having each user with their own iCloud ID means you dont get everyone's imessages on every device.

I personally think it would be worth it. I use the music match service to keep music synced across both our iPhones and iPads and my macbook. Being able to access my pages, presentations and spreadsheet documents from the iCloud is handy and if I needed to purchase additional iCloud storage I would consider it worth it.

Dropbox is handy but it isn't as nicely integrated as iCloud if you run several Mac products. If photo stream is taking up your space then edit or move some to Dropbox and keep using iCloud. The other issue with Dropbox is that you don't start with much space unless you pay or refer people.
