I did not know about the long snout thing, but as mentioned here... I resemble that remark applies to the belly thing.....

If you ever get the chance to see an older doe and its fawn together, it will be really obvious.
The does kick out the young buttons to fend for themselves before gun season. At least they do in our area. You will see a single deer coming to a feeder etc. Its usually a button buck if its by itself.

Yep, I have made that mistake in the past of shooting a loner, only to find "buttons". Now I just watch and wait for the family groups and then it is pretty easy to tell.
