When I was a kid I always carried an old piece of cotton flannel and a patch knife on the strap of my possibles bag. You can get a lot of shots out of a couple square feet of cotton.

I wish I could find my old notes, a .53 ball was hard to load so I went to .52 and a thicker patch. I could hit the 16” gong at 100 yards pretty consistently from the rest.

I have a 45 caliber Kentucky rifle. If you don't get that ball centered well on the patch, the accuracy drops off fast. Round patches seemed to work best. All this talk has me thinking I need to browse the web for a buckskin shirt and some moccasins.
