Back in 1976, an Okarche P.D. officer showed me his 59 at their range. I was used to revolvers and 1911's. He told me to shoot it until it was dry. I shot 6 rounds and looked at him, then 6 more and looked at him again. He was grinning ear to ear. "Shoot it!" he said. I kept shooting and finally ran it dry. I was amazed at this new wonder gun. The 59 was the ONLY gun with grips big enough that would fill my hand.

So, stupid question becasue I don't know 1911s. Is this considered a 1911? I learned of these years ago here on OSA and have always had an interest in them since you oldtimers on here introducted them to me.

It’s not a 1911, per se, but it is a hammered fired steel pistol that is built like a tank. I bought one here a few months ago, because I like hammer fired steel pistols.

A 1911 is a single action gun with a manual safety and a grip safety. It has a single stack magazine of 7 rounds (45). The grip angle for me is just dead nuts on when I bring it up to eye level.

The Smith 59 family is double action with a manual safety that operates in reverse direction from the 1911. The redeeming feature of the 59 is the staggered magazine holds 15 rounds (9mm). The grip angle is too steep for my taste.

The Model 39 is the same style gun but is single stacked like the 1911. It looks to have the same grip angle as the 1911 also. I don't know, I've never held one.
