If you have the funding, I'd go with the Ruger 10/22 or a Marlin Model 60. I got a 10/22 for my now 7 year old on her fifth birthday, got a beater stock and spray painted it hot pink, keeping the new one for later in life. She loves it and so does my 5 year old. The Marlin 60 would be another good bet since they are relatively cheap and easy to find. I thought about the chipmunk for them, but found the semiauto to be more appealing to ME. I have an old single shot Winchester 121, and love it to death, but it can't keep the pace the semi's can. If you have to have a single shot, you can always download the magazine or tube (in the case of the Marlin.) Then, when you have taught them the fundamentals, they can advance to more capacity.
They make a youth model 10/22 it has a shorter stock and barrel. I'd sure love to have one myself.

Dont discount the cricket rifles. My neighbor bought his son's one and they love it. I asked his boys what they got for Christmas and he said, "A real live sniper rifle!" They love it.
I work at one of the academy sports stores and the little $100 crickets are a great first rifle. They are affordable to teach the basics and then if they are into shooting you can always step up to the marlin 60 or the ruger 10/22. We also at some locations have the TC single shot 22lr too that is little and neat.

I went with the Cricket because it is safer single shot and it gives them time to think about what they are doing. Once he was able to master that he moved up to a Marlin 60 then Ruger SR22 and now an AR. He recieved his first rifle at 7 and he is 9 now and we are working on building him an AR. He loves shooting and has gotten me back into it. I bought the stainless/ blue Cricket and recently added a scope as he learned the basics and showed he could safely handle it he got to upgrade. Now we are going to work on the long range shooting.
Sounds awesome! I was hitting an 8" plate at 225 yds with a Marlin bolt 22 shooting cheap Federal consistently. I immediately noticed shooting 22 improved my aim with the big boombooms. 22 is excellent long distance training!
Just bought two cricketts for the grandkids. They really like them!!!
Some folks might dissagree but I think a single shot is a great choice for first rifles.
Mostly because I don't want to get accidently shot more than once.....
Plus it tends to force them to focus on the basics more.
Plenty of time for pray and spray later in life.
