Making a similar to this knife?

I saw a few modified Wharncliffes in 5”-7” range, but no straight up Wharncliffes over 4”. I dunno if there’s a technical reason or if nobody thinks there’s a market for them, but if push came to shove, I’d guess it’s ROI concerns.

I know we have a couple of custom knife makers here, like @mike miller and @Dan308 . I think @Johnny has also done some knifemaking.

I have made a couple larger sheepsfoot blades in the past in the 4.5-6" range. from 1/8" or 5/32" steel I cant remember its been a while. The only big concern to me with that Wharncliff design is the longer you make it from thinner steel the thinner and more easily the tip will break, not if but when. A little of that can be combated with a short hollow grind vs a saber grind but it shill makes for a weak tip with thin steel, which is why most larger ones are likely thicker like 3/16" or so...


For me, I haven't made any larger Wharncliffes just due to how long it took me to sell smaller ones, since my market was more to outdoors and bushcrafters not self defense styles.

I've kinda worried about the tip on the SPEW I have but it's held in against the usage I have for it without issues, which is kind of why I've wanted a bigger size. I don't really NEED a bigger size --- I just kind of want one anyways.

It mainly would come down to HT, the steel and just how long and pointy ya wanted it.

The one from Post #9 is supposed to be something like 5" with 4.5" of handle behind it, which I think is about the high end of justifiability to be honest. The design on that one is one that I like (blade, not really 100% with the handle) but I just don't know what kind of quality it is. The store on Etsy seems to have good ratings but I couldn't find a single shred of evidence of their existence off that site when I looked, so who knows in reality. Just like the listing SAYS it's normally 244 but is on sale for 70ish. No way to track if that is really a true sale or just false marketing the way Amazon does it.

So I've always really loved the CRKT S.P.E.W. knife that I have.... and I know we have a lot of custom knife makers on here. So I'm curious if anyone has ever attempted a similar blade profile in a larger size, and/or how much would something like this cost to make? This one is a 3" blade and 6" overall, so my curiosity would be towards maybe a 5" blade size. Are there any gotchas with the Wharncliffe blade profile with the strong diagonal taper on the top?

I had a Spyderco Yojimbo (pretty much the folding version of the Ronin that was posted) and ended up trading it off because of the very thin tip..I was afraid of snapping it. It was a cool knife though and I do like wharncliffe blades.
