I used to work with a guy who was full of ********. He never bragged about being a top tier Ranger underwater sniper parachutist, but he's a heavy supporter of assault weapons bans, because we need to keep guns out of the hands of the mentally unstable. Nobody needs assault weapons, he says.

The same guy who used to brag about being in Kuwait and popping off stray dogs simply out of boredom.

The pendulum has swung from spitting on GIs during the Viet Nam era, to worshiping them now. When you create a special class of "hero", there's always going to be dipshits who want in on the stroking.

For the record, I know and work with a guy who was a Ranger in Afghanistan. IED smoked his back, and he's a civilian now. He'll talk about some of the things he did, but won't volunteer it. And he's not tall, either. Great guy, though.

I should say that me stating they were short guys is not a knock on all short guys (the best fighters/toughest guys I know are small), just those with a Napoleon Complex. We've all met them. A tiny ugly guy with a ****** job gets treated a lot different when he throws a fake combat story out there.

This is mainly a factor in social situations, bars, etc. Anywhere guys try to show off. It goes the other way too. If any of you are huge, or know any huge guys, you know the phenomenon of guys trying to start fights with them - even if the big guy is nice as can be.

Short, ugly, underemployed? Act like a badass and try to be an alpha bro. Sadly, it works. Because people are dumb. Anywhere masculine traits like being big, tough, a vet, etc have any social value...you're going to have guys with zero of those qualities lying about them or faking them.

There is a "stolen valor" law (I think) that prohibits the wearing of medals one did not earn. Some of these sick f***s go all the way.

The funniest one I ever saw was a guy who was about 15 years too young to have been in the Viet Nam war. He was claiming whatever PTSD was called then. He was hospitalized in a state mental facility, and had put together a fairly credible story. I never did learn if he was delusional or just making it all up for fun or three hots and a cot.

I have talked with a lot of veterans in my lifetime. A few from WW I, one from the attempt to catch Pancho Villa, a bunch from WW II and Korea, and many many from Viet Nam. For some reason, people often share things with me that they have kept inside for a long time. I was very close to a real seal who later worked for a different government agency. It took three years for him to open up on a limited basis. I have never repeated any of the things he told me, out of respect for his privacy.

I am very proud that I was able to place about 200 returning Viet Nam vets in excellent careers when others, and industry included, were spitting on them in one way or another.
