Mini lathe

I’ve got a buddy that is looking for a mini lathe mainly to make ink pens. He’s not wanting to spend a bunch so if you have one just taking up space, lemme know.

If he don't find anything local, ya might check Harbor Freight. I've heard good things about their small ones in the past.

Guess I should have been more specific. Wood lathe. The harbor freight ones aren’t bad, the need to swap belts around for rpm changes isn’t ideal but they’re an option. He would look at a used HF one if the price was right.

Good thing you clarified cuz my brain instantly defaulted to metal and I've been keeping my eyes peeled.

The lathe Harbor Freight sells is reasonable. What gets the price up is the tooling and cutting tools plus it needs to be mounted on a sturdy base. One rest that is over the standard 4" can run into some serious money. Steady rests are expensive.
Never did ink pens, just turkey call strikers on mine.
If he is looking at a quality Delta wood lathe that is reasonably priced with a butt load of tooling, cutting tools and a cast iron/oak base floor mount with drawers, have him contact me. I haven't used it in a couple of years and my interests have moved along.

I've found that a small metal lathe to work better with the more fragile woods like burls and curly maple. Easier to control the depth of cut and less chance of shattering. I still use wood turning tools on the tool rest for a lot of the woods. I'm using an OLD Craftsman atlas the works pretty good. Just posted some for sale if'n you're looking for a stocking stuffer.
