Wow! A thread about pump action scatterguns? I thought they were out of style these days. I thought they were all replaced with AR-15s.

Being a shotgun lover myself, I gotta tell ya, the 88 Mav is probably the best bang for the buck when it comes to shotguns. I had a Mav back in the day. Ran almost as good as my 500. Just don't feed it any 3 inch magnum loads. I'm talking NONE! I probably fired less than a dozen through mine and it locked up the action tight as a drum. Stick with 2 3/4s and you'll be ok.
I have shot dozens of 3” magnums through my Maverick 88....... wonder if I am just lucky that my action hasn’t locked up or if you got one that had some sort of flaw from the factory? I think that I will investigate before shooting anymore. Is this a known widespread problem? I think that the 88 is supposed to handle 3” magnums. Right?

I’ve shot 3” buckshot thru mine also. The gun didn’t seem to mind it as much as my aging right shoulder did! I have the older one with the recoil brick on the butt of it. I’ve noticed that the new ones have an updated version for the recoil pad.

I've had four 870s over a 35 year period and loved them and bought a Maverick just to try something different. To me it was every bit as good as the Remingtons and had a few things I liked better. The open ejection port, slimmer forend, and action release, to name a few and I paid about 170 bucks at Walmart. It had a long length of pull so I had to cut about 1/2 inch off the stock and the safety was a little bit stiff were my only complaints.

Mine has a stiff safety as well, but it's not a big deal. In fact, it was pretty stiff all around when new, but has smoothed out considerably now. It shoots well. I like that they have dual action bars and dual extractors. Remington Reduced Recoil 00 Buck produces about a softball-size spread at 10 yards. For a home defense shotgun, you can't beat it for the price. I think it's a fine shotgun for it's intended purposes.
