My S&W 3rd Gens - Modifying grips for a CS9

I was very pleased with the accuracy and performance of both pistols on their first trips to the range, on Saturday. Turns out the 908S is missing the firing pin safety plunger and spring. I ordered new parts form Numrich. Not sure why a previous owner would remove that...seems like an important piece to keep.

I do prefer the plastic grips of the 908S. The rubber Hogue grips on the CS9 are pretty much worn out and I'm not too fond of how fat and sticky they are. I put a WTB thread out on one of the S&W forums and one of the members sent me a 3913 grip for free. I plan on modifying it to fit the CS9.

The CS9 was just about as dirty as the 908S.

My guess is those parts got "sprung" and are out there in "lost parts land" with countless other small spring fed parts.

Wasn't the 645 a gen 2?

I bought one new when they first came out in '86, if I remember correctly. It was my first new handgun purchase.

A few years later a friend talked me out of it. Always wished I would have kept that one.

That's a definite possibility. When I removed the slide on one of these the other day, the recoil spring and guide instantly flew across the room. Those parts are relatively big and it took me a while to find the spring. It had landed half way across the room in a box that I keep empty 12g hulls in.

I think I have the grips lined up right where they should be. In my research, I've seen many pictures of modified grips that don't quite have the mag release cutout aligned with the mag release. I'm a bit of a perfectionist (i.e. anal) when it comes to this stuff. I should have some time tonight to cut them to length.

I have no idea what genereation it was. Way back then I didn't even know they had different generations. I'd really like to have my first one back. I still remember the serial number. TBL9433

I think 1st gens are 2-digit models (39, 59). The 3-digit models are 2nd gen and 4-digit models are 3rd gen. But there are exceptions like the value line of 3rd gens (908, 909, 910, 915). Confusing for sure. Here's what I use as a guide...

Got my grip mod finished tonight. Although not perfect, it'll do just fine.
