I know what you're thinking.
Nixon made a living from being the anti-communist politician publicly.
As a member of the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, he doggedly pursued Communists like Alger Hiss wherever they were hiding.

1:
And yet, it was Nixon that formally recognized communist China, while throwing our Taiwan allies overboard.
He even made a trip to communist China as part of the betrayal and then bragged "only Nixon could have gone to China".

2:
On top of that, he is the father of the Environmental Protection Agency.

3:
Even worse, he instituted wage and price controls that made it illegal for a business to charge higher prices or pay a higher wage to employees.
Gold plated medical insurance policies were originally created by businesses to evade those wage and price controls and thereby give a backdoor raise to employees without violating the law.
Government price limits on gasoline created the shortages that led to long gasoline lines in the 70's and if price controls and shortages aren't the hallmarks of communism I don't know what is.

4:
He abolished the gold standard and gave us the fiat currency that we are stuck with today.

So, is Nixon the first communist preznit or only the worst communist preznit? :hithead:

I used to really like Nixon - however I was really young when he was in office.

Sadly, the more that I think about him and the more that I understand the things he did... let's also add that Nixon ended trading of gold at the fixed price of $35 per ounce (for good or bad). I really don't hold him in NEARLY as high of regard as my childhood memories once lead me to believe.

Come to think of it, maybe childish attitudes are the reason we have our current President!

Nixon is one of my favorite presidents. Not because of his policies but personality wise and what not. I remember people kinda irritated by me when I posted a thread celebrating his birthday.
