Obama Orders 12,000 Troops to the U.S. Mexico Border

HOUSTON - With Arizona's tough illegal immigration law and republican senators pressing him on immigration issues, President Barack Obama had to do something. So Tuesday the President ordered 12,000 National Guard troops to boost security along the U.S. Mexico border.
According to an Obama administration official the National Guard troops will work on intelligence surveillance and reconnaissance support, analysis training and support efforts to block drug trafficking.
"Washington has been an abject failure at sending the appropriate resources and boots on the ground and technology to the border region to secure it," Governor Rick Perry said.
The governor has been asking the Obama administration for National Guard troops to help secure the border since January of last year.
"And as late as last month requesting upwards of 3000 border patrol for the state of Texas," Perry said.
Some question if 12,000 National Guard troops and $500 million is enough to make a difference.
"The numbers are too small to make any noticeable impact on what's going on, on the violence on the border," said Bob Price with U.S. Border Patrol Watch.
"I don't think it's a good idea," said Juan Alvarez, a local advocate for illegal immigrants.
Alvarez said he sees problems with National Guard troops taking on the role of Border Patrol agents.
"If we have any problems or complaints who are we going to complain to," Alvarez said.
The governor's complaint - what took so long?
"Secure the border Washington," Perry said. "Then we can go about our business of thoughtful immigration reform and Americans and Mexicans will be better served by that."
So when will all this take place? Specific details on when and where troops will be deployed is still being ironed out.
