OK - what does "once removed" mean in the kinship vocabulary? I've heard that term before, but don't have a hog's idea what it means.

I believe it, the similarity is amazing. Every time I look at BHO I feel I see Palin.

It just means that you're not on the equal generation to the person being compared against.
In other words: My 2nd cousin's daughter is my 2nd cousin once removed. Further, my cousin's child and my child are 2nd cousin's to each other while I would be once removed. Their kids would be 3rd cousins to each other and I would be twice removed etc...
