Charge dismissed against OKC officer accused of excessive force against 71-year-old man

Attorney General Gentner Drummond has dismissed a criminal charge against an Oklahoma City police officer accused of using excessive force that landed a 71-year-old man in the hospital.

Not good. Especially since everyone knows if the old guy had been black the cop would be hung from a lamp post. There will be low lifes trying to punish the cops.

The civil lawsuit can still be pursued however. Drummond is WAY OUT OF LINE on this one

Family will have to settle for civil lawsuit. Usually settled & paid by city insurance. Interesting case though.

Qualified immunity seems solid in this case though. Drummond even seemed to affirm it. He said the cop was following his training & “For everyone’s safety, it is imperative to follow an officer’s instructions and to never strike, push, or make any kind of unwelcome physical contact with an officer. This is the law, and the law applies equally to all. No individual is allowed to hit or push an officer,…”

Sadly, this is the truth.

Times sure have changed since I was a strapping young policeman. I'm glad I'm rounding 3rd and headed for home.

The civil lawsuit settlement anticipated $$ amount took a big hit today I bet. If the cop was charged & later found guilty, the civil lawsuit $$ would be huge. But now, seems like the AG actions & statements today gave the city’s side of the case a huge Christmas gift.

Don't know about that, pretty sure we'll see a jury trial.

I don't really have a problem with criminal charges not going forward. Cop needs fired and city needs to pay. And hopefully that will drive an evaluation of their hiring and training practices. They need people with better judgement.

To me it seems like he is putting the cart before the horse in saying that the internal investigation is ongoing to see if the officer violated training or policy. Maybe the AG should let the process play out before interjecting himself into it. Hell, maybe let a grand jury decide if there is anything to prosecute.

Then he goes on to say that the law applies equally to everyone. I highly doubt that he would step in if the accused wasn’t a cop.

The investigation is still ongoing and this cop is still on leave. Hopefully Drummond receives enough blowback that he wises up.
