I have belonged and mod since 1999 one of the most very family friendly motorcycle riding websites that has an average of 400 to 600 members active every day, total membership of just shy of 50k members.  The so called "Hotbox" is what saved that site. It provided a closed area to let it hang all out, politics, religion, anything goes, no rules. It kept and keeps the rest of the board clean and on focus of the individual topic areas. It simply works.If you don't let grown adults be grown adults in one non constricted area, they tend to get bored, start shying away, and the site starts down a slow spiral death of non posts and inactivity.  The "Hotbox" keeps all the arguing about above said subjects in one place and not all over the board.
