They say they are trying to protect against plastic firearms getting past metal detectors. I think they are scared that 3D printers are going to bring back our 2A rights. Most likely they will slip wording into any legislation to make sure the technology stays totally under their thumb.

As always, the devil is in the details.

Federal law enforcement authorities are raising concerns new, futuristic 3-D printed guns made entirely out of plastic could pose a myriad of security threats across the U.S., as a law banning undetectable firearms is set to expire.

3-D industrial printers that can create plastic models and prototypes can make workable guns that can't be picked up by metal detectors, and officials say they could pose a threat to countless government institutions, schools and other buildings.

A longtime ban on undetectable firearms is scheduled to expire Dec. 9 and two Democratic senators, Chuck Schumer of New York and Bill Nelson of Florida, have called for a ban on plastic guns. Rep. Steve Israel, D-N.Y., also has introduced legislation on the issue....

umm... forgive my ignorance over polymers, but how resilient is a plastic bolt/barrell? Don't these parts still have to be metal?

Yes, yes they do. This is like deja vu. Sounds just like when Glocks first hit the market. "OMG! OMG! They can't be picked up by metal detectors! OMG! We're all gonna die!"

...Wilson’s weapon is almost entirely plastic: Fifteen of its 16 pieces have been created inside an $8,000 second-hand Stratasys Dimension SST 3D printer, a machine that lays down threads of melted polymer that add up to precisely-shaped solid objects just as easily as a traditional printer lays ink on a page. The only non-printed piece is a common hardware store nail used as its firing pin.

Wilson crouches over the gun and pulls out the barrel, which was printed over the course of four hours earlier the same morning. Despite the explosion that just occurred inside of it, both the barrel and the body of the gun seem entirely unscathed.

So the answer to your question is "no." But it will not stand up to very many firings.

That punk pulled a Glock 7 on me. You know what that is? It's a porcelain gun made in Germany. Dosen't show up on your airport X-ray machines, here, and it cost more than you make in a month.

A painfully long angry rant in which Maddow reviles plastic guns, cop killer bullets, anti-aircraft guns, extended magazines and Dick Cheney. No argument is used against plastic guns other than the assertion that they will pass through metal detectors putting people at risk everywhere.

I'd love to have someone ask her what firearms she considers acceptable. Her true answer is of course, "none."

I couldn't take any more than three or four minutes of her little rant. Were I to hear any more of her, I'd :puke: all over my keyboard.
