Little known fact that this is what we call a 'bootstrap paradox' and Eugene Stoner was a time traveller. A bootstrap paradox is similar to a temporal paradox except it is sort of in reverse. Eugene travelled to the future in which he had already invented the rifle about which we are speaking. In the future, he copied the rifle. Then he travelled back to the past and 'invented' it.

That is the way I have always heard it anyway.

Warpusher and john64 got it.
I had seen and handled many 1941 johnson rifles over the years, but had never seen one disassembled until last weekend.
Its always interesting to find out some "new" innovation was developed long ago. That goes for many of todays "new" guns as well.

The first DI gas system was on a Mexican rifle called a mondragon. It was first issued in 1908, and was actually used by the German Air Force for a short time in WWI for the aircraft observers, before they got smart and started issuing them machine guns.there was also a Danish rifle called a ljungman, but wasn't successful.
