Straight water quenched wheel weight is plenty hard for all my faster stuff.
Too hard and you can get leading, as the bullet will be too hard to bump up and seal and the powder will blow around the bullet.
HOT Powder around the bullet that is...then you have terribly fouling.
My wheel weight lead and simple Lee alox on a gas checked bullet has seen 2000 fps in my 30-30
That is a 172gr bullet.
Of course gas check helps a bunch.
My wheel weight 200gr 45acp bullets do not expand at all when shot into oak or hard soil at 625-850fps.
They actually look good enough to load and shoot again.
I do not shoot steel with those.. as they will ricochet.
I have done a 50/50 mix soft and wheel weight for the 45 acp
and 2/3 wheel weight and 1/3 soft for the 357 mag.
I have used the same 357 mix in my 30-30 with no leading issues.
Sized right and good lube.
Are you guys worried about leading or just want to make a lead bullet look like a non lead bullet?
