If this person was a gay female basketball player they would already be home.
Actually, she was held & in prison for 9 months before being released. So technically, he can’t get released until around January in order to have the same detention benefit as a gay female basketball player..

We used to go up to Canada and fish Lake of the Woods a lot. The first time we went they searched the whole truck and boat we in and asked if we had any firearms or weapons. When they got to the tackle boxes they found our Kershaw filet knifes and at the time had changeable blades in the handle. The lady at the border shack about hauled us in and after some explaining we were allowed through. Coming back years later we had a Diawa reel in a black case in the truck bed the US border guards thought it was a handgun. Good fishing but hated going back and forth with all the headaches.

i feel for the guy, but he broke the law of another country (even if inadvertent). If we expect visitors here to follow our laws, why would we send anyone 'in' to get this guy?

Would we do the same against mexico, or canada, or china or russia? Would we allow another country to tell us how to enforce our laws in such a situation?

wasn't there an american who was sentenced to be caned in singapore in the 90s for violating one of their laws?

12 years for willfully attempting to traffic arms or ammunition to another country, sure.

but potentially facing over a decade in prison over what could be construed as an honest mistake, 4 rounds of ammunition, is absurd.

I think it would be appropriate to ban US travel there, in the same way we ban travel to North Korea.

what you're describing is an issue with mandatory minimums, which we use for drug crimes here in some places. It doesn't allow for 'honest mistakes'
