I just signed up and drove from BA to Seminole. I noticed that the thing beeps a lot more than just when I get off or on the toll road, as in, sometimes when I just pass a toll.
It is measuring the distance you travel the turnpike. When I first started reading my statements I noticed I pay far less for tolls because I don't always travel the full distance.
Mine beeps every time I pass one of those sensors, which are everywhere, especially on the Creek turnpike because there are some many places to get on and off.
It measures distance to be fair and it also keeps track of location so if you were to remove said pass and therefore it will not sense an exit or whatever else, it will use your last known location to approximate your bill.
I have noticed that mine will beep in downtown OKC by Bass-Pro when traveling in the eastbound direction. I have wondered if they are also using them to track other things like traffic flow but don’t know what such a small cross section of the public’s information could show. I wish they could integrate them into the Denver 470 system and the Kansas system so I could use it everywhere. They are certainly on the same frequency because they beep there too. The Denver 470 toll road has moved to a license plate reading system which is where all systems will eventually go; this is a major part of why our license plates were updated to the new machine readable design.
This is driving me crazy: Where does the power come from to make the thing beep / power the speaker? As near as I can tell, there are no batteries in there, and even if there were, they'd be dead by now.
