I've noticed a couple of manufacturers that look to have their slide inside the frame instead of on top. What would be the advantage to this? It looks to me that a smaller slide would give you less area to rack it.

Uninterrupted full length frame rails for the slide to ride on. It's a bulkier frame design with less slide surface to grasp. It's not necessary, as plenty of designs have proven the robust nature of the internal rail design seen on the 1911, Glock, etc.
