Life proof would be the thinnest case I put my 5 into. But I'm hooked on the griffin survivor. But then again I have big pockets.
I have an otter box now and it's ok. When magpul comes out with a case for the 5 I'll go back to it. I really liked the one I had for my 3s.

Otterbox commuter less bulk than the defender series. Add a zag invisishield and call it good. I bought 2 16's and yeah they went in cases before exiting the store and went straight to woodland hills to get AppleCare+ started on them.

I was going to say Otter Box but that's not what you want. I have one on my 3g and have for 2 years. The phone looks brand new under the case and the case shows wear. I am very hard on my phones and this case rocks. Others may be better though. I have dropped mine so many times and work outside so dirt is always a problem but my phone has outlasted any other more than 5 times. I am going to check on these other ones that have been suggested.
LifeProof or an Element with VZ grips.
I have a speck and I couldn't be happier. The reason that I bought it was because it is the thinnest that I found. I wanted a case that didn't take away from the feel of my phone and this one really doesn't. It isn't bulky and holds up very well being dropped. It is shock resistant. I have dropped my phone several times and it has never sustained any damage. It cost about $35 at a shop here in the mall. But I know you can get them cheaper online. I don't think you can go wrong with it. There are several colors to choose from and the rubber is made in to the plastic. It isn't two pieces like some are.
