I picked up some bulk .223 ammo from Steel Ridge (AmmoNation). I've bought plenty of reman from Freedom Munitions with no problems but the stuff from Steel Ridge just looks like crap.
The brass has a lot of dings/dents in it and looks a bit abused. I went through all of the rounds (1K) and found 1 that had the bullet a bit too deep in the casing and then around 160 that looked like the bullet wasn't seated correctly. The depth issue is of varying degrees, but this is what most look like.

I know I'm not shooting the short one but is this a problem with the other rounds?

Holy crap man. I would be returning that stuff. Apparently they don't let quality control get em down. I guess if you have a bolt action it's not that big of a deal. Well that one would be. I sure wouldn't load that stuff into mags for an emergency!

Do you have a pair of calipers to measure OAL? One thing about cheap 55 grn FMJ bullets is that the cannelure position AND actual bullet size can vary drastically. I can tell you that the same thing happens to me when reloading. Even though the seating die depth never changes, the bullet looks to be at different positions because the cannelure position and the actual bullet dimensions vary. I don't shoot hardly any factory ammo, but I have seen the same bullet setback issue in M855 produced by a major manufacturer. When you are manufacturing millions of anything, mistakes happen.

Looks like the one way into the case possibly missed a neck sizing step.
May have looked good when they shipped it ,, then it got jostled and seated itself deeper into the case
from lack of neck tension.

Send them an email with pictures and you may save a headache for the next guy.

I would like to dissect a few rounds of that.. measure case dimensions and bullet ogive and powder weight.
Or if you have the tools I would do such.

I contacted AmmoNation, told them my issue with the ammo as well as sent the two pics. Response;

"These pictures are definitely not the norm for any ammo from our suppliers. I can send you a shipping label for FedEx. When that ammo ships back I will have another 1,000 223 from Steel Ridge sent to you. Ammo Nation Inc takes pride in fast shipping with quality ammunition. Please do not expect these problems in future orders. Thanks again for you business."

So, we'll see on the ammo but at least the CS seems to be pretty good.

Sound like they're going to take good care of you, as it should be.

I think I'd dissect a few rounds that come as replacements. Powder weights, OAL, primer seating etc. just to make sure.

Well, they sent me a return label and FedEx picked it up on Wednesday this week. I did get an email telling me my 1K rounds were in house going through QA, but no shipping details yet.
I'll update the thread once I get the ammo.

Finally have a resolution to the ammo issue, not what I was hoping for, but the better outcome I think;

"Recently you made a purchase of 1,000 rounds of Steel Ridge 223. We appreciate your patience for waiting longer than usual to receive your ammunition. Recently Ammo Nation Inc received 50k rounds of ammunition from steel ridge. When we began inspecting the rounds, we immediately noticed a quality control issue. It seems there machine was causing bad crimps, low powder, and dented brass. We at Ammo Nation hold all of our vendors to a high standard for any ammunition that we sell. Unfortunately since this has happened we had to come to the decision to pull all steel ridge from our website indefinitely. Due to this we will be unable to fulfill your order at this time. You will be receiving a full refund today, you should receive another confirmation email shortly. We understand how upsetting and unprofessional this may seem, we just can't take a chance of a customer hurting a weapon or themselves. Thank you for business, we hope to work with you in the future."
