I live and work in Lawton. Lawton's three major employers are the Military, Goodyear, and Lawton Public Schools. People constantly complain about the resources their children have in the schools. We have not purchased textbooks in at least 10 years. The ones we have are either falling apart or are outdated. Parents constantly compare our resources with other districts, which have more and better resources.
Once in a great while I will try to explain, that other than Goodyear, Lawton does not produce anything, and is basically a government supported economy, which generates less taxes and relies on government support. In a system that does not produce wealth, and the government is allocating resources, you have the same infrastructure other places have, it is just of a lesser quality. The government will supply for needs but wants are not covered. wants are provided by wealth, which is why I teach an Advanced Placement course with a textbook that is 5 editions behind the current curriculum. The course requires you to have a textbook, but you want one that is functional.
