And what I'm saying is that there is no possible way to tax our way out of this. I don't care if you take away the tax shelters, tax the super-rich, rich, middle-class, or every person and corporation in the country at 100%. If you took everything--100% of income from 100% of people and corporations--it would take seven or so years (or more--the estimates are now above $100T) to pay it off. The money Just. Isn't. There. The promises are no good. It cannot be done. A bunch of promises are simply going to have to be broken. The only way to "fix" the country is to reduce spending, and that means reneging upon promises. The promises are bigger than the possible income, so we have to welsh. Sorry, but the numbers aren't lying. Your elected officials have lied to you for decades, promising things like a "trust fund" that's nothing more than the government promising to pay the government back. The money is gone. Spent. It bought a military to piss in cornflakes all over the world, a welfare society to make sure that nobody has to work, all kinds of "scientific" studies in this country and others, foreign aid to countries that hate us anyway, and a million other things. But it's gone. Spent. Squandered. Kaput. And now that it's gone, it can't be spent to keep old promises. To be entirely fair, the Baby Boomers who are about to lose their Social Security cheques kind of (collectively) deserve it--they are the ones who elected the assclowns who decided to spend the money in the first place.
