One of 1400 made. Ship date of June 1940 to an individual. I have not done a historical letter on it so that’s all the info I have. I purchased it at a Sheriff’s action in the condition you see it in with no history. There are several grind marks as shown in pictures but mechanical everything is very tight considering the age. This is an extremely rare revolver that could be refinished or parted out for the price. I’m asking 2,000 in Ponca city

why was this revolver ground upon?

Only made from roughly 1940 to halt in production due to WW2. Fewer made than the Reg Magnums. RM and NRM are considered some of the most desirable SW revolvers ever made. Condition is little rough but this is a historical and very cool gun.

I wonder how well the S&W custom shop could restore that beauty? I've had them do amazing work on a gun or two...at a very reasonable price.

The frame number inside is not legible.

Is this a N frame? It looks like a model 27 3.5 inch.

I too wonder why the extreme grinding marks especially on a Smith of this quality. Note the engraving on the cylinder. Now that I'm looking at it, it looks more like a practice piece for engraving rather than a work of art.

I will try to get a better picture of the frame number tonight.
The only guess I have is someone engraved their ss# and name on it or very identifiable engraving was added, it was then stolen and the thief tried to remove the identifying marks. It somehow came into possession of the sheriffs office sometime in the last 40 years then I purchased it at auction
