Buddy that has too much money and no common sense buys a Savage 110 in .338 Lapua. Wants to shoot a deer at 1000 yards. Mounts a $4000 Schmitt-Bender mil-rad scope on it. Has no clue how vs a mil-rad scope operates, but by God, it’s a $4000 scope!
Long story short, took him to New Mexico on an elk hunt. he dumped a mag on an elk, missed every time at 400 yds and had to use my 30-06 to kill his after telling him the hold over.
He shot a doe with it last week. Ran 30 yards and died.
He was shocked thinking the round was going to blow the deer in half.
Nope, just penciled through, but the deer died.
Not much different than a 55 grain .223.
His rifle quit shooting two days ago. ACCU-trigger wouldn’t reset.
I’d never messed with a savage before so did dome online research. Butt ton of info, none helping.
Finally worked the way to the bolt. Bingo. The firing pin sleeve was locked up. Tons of penetration oil and some cleaning of the bolt fixed the issue.
Owner professed he runs his firearms dry with no lube.
Why? Do you run no oil in your vehicle?
No Answer.

I have often wondered about that 338 for deer killing.
I have thought I would need a light thin jacketed bullet and I do not think a 338 lapua bullet will be constructed like that.

I have used the Hornady SP 55gr in .223 and HORRIBLE results on deer that tiny bullet does not cause the trauma that the 55 V max does.
I got rid of all those 55 SP after shooting 2 deer with them.
Dozens of deer and hogs have fallen to the 55 V max for me and I never had to track a single one.

Pick the bullet that is appropriate for the job.
