The founding fathers intended for the citizens to be able to arm and defend themselves from tyrants, foreign and domestic.

I also want to throw out there for the members of the government who say that a militia should be referred to only as "soldiers" that any citizen who has registered for the selective service or taken an oath to defend the country in any way possible would in all technical means be a part of a militia and should be given the full rights to own firearms.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Militia

The first legislation on the subject was The Militia Act of 1792 which provided, in part:

That each and every free able-bodied white male citizen of the respective States, resident therein, who is or shall be of age of eighteen years, and under the age of forty-five years (except as is herein after excepted) shall severally and respectively be enrolled in the militia, ... every citizen, so enrolled and notified, shall, within six months thereafter, provide himself with a good musket or firelock....

Why do they think "the people" in the second amendment refers to a collective right, and "the people, persons" in the 1st, 4th, 5th, 9th and 10th references individual rights?

Because they think we are ignorant and can be manipulated.

Dont be ignorant.

Given what they're trying to do the First right now codifying who counts as "press," I think they're pretty much of one mind on all of the amendments.
