Senior Citizens' Demand for Firearms Training Up '400 Percent'
Senior Citizens’ Demand for Firearms Training Up ‘400 Percent’
by AWR Hawkins 2 May 2016

..."Sensibly Armed manager Ryan Perry observed, “A firearm is the only thing that can put a 95-year-old widow, that hasn’t left the house in 20 years, on the exact same playing field as a 22-year-old boxing heavyweight world champion.”...

I would have to strongly disagree with Mr. Perry.

It's too bad this husband and wife in England didn't have a gun and firearms training, YA THINK????

Retired couple tied up, tortured and had BOILING water poured on them
Retired businessman, 66, and his wife, 64, had BOILING water poured over them by armed robbers who threatened to kill their grandchildren as they tortured them
  • Husband and wife in their 60s were left with 'life changing' injuries
  • They are 'traumatised' and are being treated at specialist burns unit
  • Police said three men broke into the victims' home and tortured them
  • Couple were also threatened with a knife and beaten up by gang

It's absurd to think that merely possessing a weapon and having the basic knowledge of its use would prepare someone for that type of event.

With thinking like that, a person is already doomed to any chance of self defense/preservation. I have read a number of cases in the NRA's Armed Citizen column where senior citizens(male and female) have successfully defended themselves. If you want to become another victim of crime/murder, that's up to you.

Myth 2: Firearms don’t give senior citizens an advantage during a criminal attack.

Police have noted that the woman has a Right-to-Carry permit. Further, the woman already made arrangements to protect herself after her gun was taken as evidence, telling police that her neighbor had lent her another firearm.

I've done several "Women Only" defense classes that had a majority of recent widows, who quite reasonably wanted more training on their handguns so they would feel more secure.
Many of them made good students, and used their handguns effectively. For whatever reason, I get few male senior citizen students: maybe they know it all.
Don't fall into the "age prejudice" trap of assuming gray hair brings sudden senility and incompetence. The 3 teenage jerks that tried to strong arm rob me got to demonstrate running ability when I asked "are you bulletproof?"

We have several women, some in their 80's that attend our NRA women on target program. Some have never handled a firearm of any kind in their past.
By the time they leave, they get the opportunity to shoot hundreds of rounds from different platforms.
Of course that is not defensive training, but it does get them basic firearms handling that they might get to use in the future.
It's kind of like our CPR trainer. We practiced one day with props, but he brought up anecdotal stories of people that had taken the training in the past, and when they had to use it in real life, that training came back to them.
We all hope this same situation occurs with the folks we are talking about.
