I'm not sure why SS recipiants should get a COLA when a lot of (I won't say majority because I don't know, but it's got to be a fair amount of) employers aren't handing them out to employees. When times are tough - they suck for everybody.
One difference is that some of us who draw SS are getting a little long in the tooth to aggressively compete in the job market. If you don't like what you're making go to work for someone else or join a union, God forbid. Another difference is we paid into the SS system 50+ years with the understanding that we'd get a return adjusted to some reasonable extent for inflation. After you've made that kind of long term investment and reached your mid 60s+ you're welcome to climb on my back and tell me what you think I should or shouldn't get from my investment in SS.
Uhhh.... define "sky high"

We've been under 3% all year for 2012.
Yep the numbers put out by the .gov are propagandic crap. I too will use my checkbook to do the gauging, thank you very much.
My healthcare insurance has doubled since Obama took office.
Gasoline has doubled since Obama took office.
Some groceries have close to doubled since Obama took office.
My utilities are definitely higher, though I don't know the number.
Meanwhile, my auto insurance, homeowners insurance, property taxes and sales taxes have sure as hell not went down any.
I can just imagine how it must be if you only have SS for an income stream. You guys keep on drinking that government furnished kool-aid...
What do you feel is a more reliable price index? How has it fared in the past 10 years compared to CPI-W?
The price of fuel is as reliable an indicator as you will find. I know that the most noticeable effects from inflation for me is the price of fuel and fertilizer. Grain and meat prices are high because if you guys want food on the shelf, we gotta cover big azz bills.
