I’m curious about how many folks are going to be affected by the passage of the Social Security Fairness Act? I’m just hoping Biden signs it. For me it’ll be the difference between chicken and beef. I told my granddaughter I’ll be able to turn up the heat in the house from 63 to 66.

Shown Here:
Passed House (11/12/2024)

Social Security Fairness Act of 2023

This bill repeals provisions that reduce Social Security benefits for individuals who receive other benefits, such as a pension from a state or local government.

The bill eliminates the government pension offset, which in various instances reduces Social Security benefits for spouses, widows, and widowers who also receive government pensions of their own.

The bill also eliminates the windfall elimination provision, which in some instances reduces Social Security benefits for individuals who also receive a pension or disability benefit from an employer that did not withhold Social Security taxes.

These changes are effective for benefits payable after December 2023.”

only a very small percentage of people will be effected by it --- people who took jobs that didn't tax them on Social Security in favor of a pension plan....maybe several million people in a population of 333 million.

most government jobs, including all the ones in Oklahoma that i'm aware of, tax you on Social Security and therefore don't effect the calculation.

Will just have to wait and see what provisions there are to qualify for it before i can say it will benifit me or not but usually when you see a increase in your social security benifits the medicare goes up also to offset whatever increase you get.

If you had your Social Security benefits reduced due to WEP/GPO then those benefits will be restored. You should already know if you suffered a reduction due to WEP or GPO. This bill eliminates the WEP/GPO penalties. There is a provision to make the bill effective to December 2023. That would equate to 12 months of retroactive payments on the increase of your monthly benefit amount.
