Ok, but in this case, the catcher is at third, the pitcher is wandering around like he’s lost, and NO ONE IS AT HOME PLATE except the next batter.If the third baseman is going to cover second base, then the catcher is supposed to cover third. Likewise, if the first baseman backs up to catch a ball, then the catcher is to try to cover first base or if a ball is being thrown to first base from the outfield, the catcher backs up the first baseman in case he misses catching the ball.
By the same token, the pitcher is also called upon to "back up" any of the bases, including home plate.
