There is a scene in “The Dirty Dozen” where all the convicts are in there hut in the training camp. On the radio is a song in German. Female vocal. The Charles Bronson character semi translates the song and says it is woman singing about the war, being alone and wishing for her husband.

Cut to “Saving Private Ryan”.

There is a scene where the soldiers are in the village shortly before the final battle scenes. I believe that they are listening to a record player. Again, there is a song in German. Female vocal. One of the guys translates it similar to what the Bronson character translates in “The Dirty Dozen.”

Anyone know if these are the same songs? The same version?

Can't remember the song in the Dirty Dozen, but it is possible. The song in Saving Private Ryan was sung by Edith Piaf. I think the title is "Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien" or "No, I Regret Nothing" but I could be wrong.:teach:

Figured I’d try to clear up any mess I might have stirred.

The music in The Dirty Dozen was by De Vol. De Vol provided two original songs for the film: a German ballad (as radio source music) with lyrics and vocals by Sibylle Siegfried (the director's wife), and an anachronistically 1960s pop song, "Bramble Bush," with lyrics by Mack David, performed by Trini Lopez (one of the dozen in the film).

The song in Saving Private Ryan is apparently a period piece by Edith Piaf.

This Edith Piaf song (written by Piaf and Marguerite Monnot) was featured in the French film Montmartre sur Seine, which premiered in 1941 and featured Piaf in the role of Lily.

During the preparations to defend Ramelle on June 13th, Corporal Upham provided a translation of this song, which was playing on a record player found amidst the blasted remains of the French town.

Sorry for any confusion.

I was watching The Dirty Dozen last night and remembered the scene from Private Ryan. Just was struck by the similarity and thought it might be sort of a salute in one movie to another.

That song wasn't actually written and recorded until the 1950's.

Lilli Marlene was popular on both sides.

Just a side note.
Jake Mcniece was a member of that group and he is still alive in Ponca city.
He was an original member of the Filthy Thirteen group. Hollywood for what ever reason renamed the group to the dirty dozen.

He currently gives speaches about the group around the country as well as written a couple of books.

I'm a member of the VFW and can assure you, this man was the badass of them all. We have visited/talked many times.
