The impact sockets are just stronger built and will apply more torque than standard thin sockets.

Some people call them weighted, because they are heavy built.
not the case... impact are generally softer than hardened thin chrome, and weighted are in fact a heavier weight socket. The best example of a readily available one would be for honda crankshaft bolts..

Yep I've heard of that. Seems like you'd have a decent chance of breaking something, but glad it worked out.
A few times now when turning the key I hear a high pitch whirring sound like the starter is spinning free. Back off and turn again and it starts right up. I'm thinking I might have damaged the starter. Its a 50 dollar starter from Amazon that has worked for 7 years.

Sounds like the bendix is sticking. (It isn't kick the starter gear out to engage flywheel)

Could be. Two things are different. I used the starter to loosen crank bolt and it got cold. Doubt it went from perfect to doing this without it having to do with one of those things. It was a pretty hard hit to turn that bolt.

Could be, or could just be it's time. Got your money out of it anyway. I'm buying almost everything from rockauto nowadays unless I've got to have it right now. It's crazy how much cheaper they are on most things vs oreilly etc.
