Of the few concerns they may have, getting you your own weapon(s) back is at the bottom of the list.
In fact, they’ll keep it, claim they got one of those evil guns off the ‘street’ and then it’ll end up in some officer’s safe or sold for $.

I had an expensive baseball bat that was seized as a “club” and was detained even though I had cleats, glove, uniforms, balls, etc with it. I was detained. Magically when I went to claim it, it had never been turned in. And because there was no report, ticket or arrest there was no ‘paperwork’ to go back to. Convenient. This was in Williamson county, TX in 1995.
Neighbor across the street was the largest donor to the sheriff. She called and inquired for me. Turns out it was sold the next day. I wanted to pursue additional legal actions but was told it was not in my best interest and that I could even be intentionally targeted if I continued to persist. Damn scumbags. And I grew up in an LE household. Still support those guys, but dang, sometimes it’s hard.

I would imagine, that human nature being what it is, most persons who basically have state or federally sanctioned power over you are going to be inclined to do a lot of fudging when it comes to your rights as a citizen. I guarantee that S&W did not end up in a furnace. Most likely you'll never get it back. Kind of like when they seize money you earned and just happen to be carrying it with you in your vehicle. It's cash, you must be running drugs, so we're taking it for safe keeping until you prove that you're not guilty. Besides, we need it more than you do.
