So in Colorado they want a gun purchaser to pay the fee for the background check at the time of purchase, and in New York they want gun owners to carry one million dollars in liability coverage. It kind of makes me think of voter ID laws. One of the left's arguments against requiring voter ID at the polls is that a state issued ID typically costs a fee, and it is discriminatory towards people who are poor and can not afford an ID.

How is requiring expensive insurance, or additional fees for a service our tax dollars have already paid for not the same thing? It makes it more costly to exercise a divine right, and for people with fixed incomes these costs may make the exercise of that right impossible. The hypocrisy kills me. Now I know, guns are usually pretty expensive, so if you have the money to spend on one, you've probably got the extra cash to pay the fee. That's not the point. You are being forced to pay money to someone else for the "privilege" of exercising your Constitutional rights, and that is just like a poll tax, and it is unconstitutional.

It just drives me nuts.

They've got it all backwards.

Voting is not a right, keeping and bearing arms is.

I'm sorry if my bluntness offends anyone, but if you're perpetually so poor you can't afford an ID, you have no business influencing the government.

Bluntness is good. Tax payers need to start realizing and agitating to protect themselves against the depredations of out of control government program growth fueled by voters who do not pay taxes. The ship is leaking and this is one of the biggest holes.

Here's a compromise. I'll show an ID and pay a fee to buy a gun if everyone has to show an ID and pay a fee to vote.

Remember when the constitution was written, only property owners could vote. It appears there was some logic in this.

So now only those with "wealth" should be able to influence the government.........That is a very troubling thought indeed. The acquisition of wealth does not always equate into ones ability to reason effectively. I think it would be better said that should the government be supporting your existence then you have no business in deciding how the government is operated.

It makes sense. How can someone vote on property rights when they have no property?

Not "wealthy." Those who can balance a budget, and set aside the $25 or whatever small amount it is to get an ID.

I could go to where I'd rather be: Property or business ownership as a prereq for voting. Active military excepted.

It occurs to me that I might have used the same title for this thread as another recent thread. If this is the case, to avoid the confusion perhaps a mod could change the thread title?
