The Longest Day.... D-Day June 6th 1944

My great uncle who passed away a few years ago was there, he was part of the 82nd Airborne. My grandpa and all 7 of his brothers served in WW2. My Grandpa and great uncle were the only ones I was close to and they didn't start talking about it until about 8 years ago. They have both passed but their stories will live on.

On Memorial Day weekend, I had the distinct pleasure of seeing the USS Batfish Memorial in Muskogee. It was eye-opening to see the conditions under which the WWII soldiers and sailors had to work and live. With luck, I'll check out the 45th Infantry Museum this weekend. One of the reasons I want to go there is because they have an extensive collection of Bill Mauldin cartoons. He is famous for the Willie and Joe cartoons that depicted the soldier's life during WWII. He was also known for aggravating the brass with his cartoons.

Here is one of his cartoons that has been a favorite of mine ever since I saw it in his book, "Up Front."

Ike's JIC letter. I guess nothing was certain all the way up the chain. Just pray, hold your breath and jump off into the deep end.

"Our landings in the Cherbourg-Havre area have failed to gain a satisfactory foothold and I have withdrawn the troops. My decision to attack at this time and place was based upon the best information available. The troops, the air and the navy did all that bravery and devotion to duly could do. If any blame or fault is attached to the attempt it is mine alone."
