In a rational world, those would be potential "hate crimes". Of course, in a rational world, an oxymoronic phrase like "hate crime" would not exist.

He reminds me of that rush guy. Hes trying to inflame a segement of readers/listeners by sounding like a tough guy. Tough behind a mic or keyboard aint tough.

In a debate I'd say, "Surely you don't mean that. To threaten violence is a very vile thing and it weakens your case."
As I understand it the best strategy is to appear reasonable to people listening to the debate. They are the ones whose minds can be changed by our reasonable, level-headed arguments.

This is absolutely true. I have found out over the past week or two that people observing a FB debate I had a couple weeks ago really took my side of the argument. My opponents hurled insults and attempted to mock me while I offered facts and well reasoned logic. They were really put off by their relatives attitude towards me. Just wish they would have spoken up if they felt that way but I guess I whipped their ass in the debate even though I was fighting the battle alone.
