Managed this morning starting about sunrise to get in some pretty good training on shooting from the car and using a car as cover. However my son who shoots IDPA has all these habits that are just not real world applicable. We were running a drill where you drive to a mock intersection then engage targets around the vehicle that are showing threats, In this case toy guns mounted on the target stands. My son wants to clear his firearm after every run and I'm like son why would you in a deadly force encounter with multiple threats would you render your weapon clear before holstering it? Same thing doing magazine changes he will run across open ground to a barricade come to a complete stop and do a mag change. I'm like why would you run with a dry weapon when you might need to reengage a target? Make that mag change as you are moving. After about four hours of scenarios and malfunction drills I think it was getting into his head that we are doing defensive training not gun gamesmanship.
